Children and Loose Teeth

kidsmileAt around the age of six, children begin to lose baby teeth as the first set of permanent teeth erupt through the gums. This is a natural process and parents should not intervene by attempting to remove a loose tooth themselves or try to speed the process along in any way.

Extracting a tooth too early is not only painful for the child but also runs the risk of allowing infections to set into the wound site. Although parents should not interfere with the natural process of tooth growth, there are other ways they can assist a child during this time:

  • Ensure that good dental care is maintained and teeth are brushed and flossed correctly
  • Schedule regular check-ups with the dentist to check on progress and catch any possible problems early
  • Encourage the child to gently wiggle a loose tooth but not to use excessive force or pull on it

While it is always preferable to let baby teeth fall out naturally this may not always be possible. If a tooth is causing excessive pain, or simply refuses to fall out, it may be necessary to intervene.

Pulling the tooth should not be attempted by parents but left to an experienced dentist to deal with. Further tips and guidance can be found at https://yourdentalhealthresource.com/can-you-pull-your-childs-loose-teeth-or-should-they-fall-out-naturally/
