What Happens During Teeth Cleaning?

work doneIt sounds straightforward enough but having teeth professionally cleaned is more than just a surface makeover. The process is usually carried out by a dental hygienist rather than a dentist and this is important as the hygienist is specifically trained for this purpose.

The entire procedure can basically be broken down into three separate stages:

Oral Examination. The hygienist will thoroughly examine the oral cavity for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, dental issues and oral cancer.

Cleaning. This is the core part of cleaning in which the hygienist removes plaque and tartar that has built up in areas that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush, such as under the top of the gumline and between the teeth.

Polishing. The final touch is to use an electric polisher to smooth and polish the surfaces of the teeth as well as remove stains.

In many cases the hygienist will also apply a professional-grade fluoride solution which helps to strengthen teeth and combat tooth decay. This additional process is optional and will depend on the hygienist's recommendation and the patient's wishes.

The frequency of professional cleaning will vary, but once or twice per year being the norm. Learn more: https://yourdentalhealthresource.com/what-can-you-expect-during-a-teeth-cleaning/
