Although dental implants are widely recognised as being one of the best methods for replacing missing teeth, they require good care.
One possible complication is peri-implantitis which affects the gum tissue and bone surrounding the base of the implant. The condition is more likely to affect people who smoke, have a history of gum disease or suffer from improperly controlled diabetes. It is also more prevalent among those who do not practise good oral hygiene.
Similar to gum disease, peri-implantitis causes:
- Redness, swelling or tenderness of the gums surrounding the implant
- Discomfort or pain under and around the implant
- Pus may also leak from under the implant
Bleeding may also occur when brushing the teeth and the implant may become loose if the condition is left untreated by a dentist. In the majority of cases, peri-implantitis can often be prevented by proper cleaning of the dental implant and following a good dental health regimen.
Any problems with, or concerns about, an implant should be discussed with the dentist as soon as possible in order to prevent losing the implant altogether. Read more about peri-implantitis at https://yourdentalhealthresource.com/what-is-peri-implantitis/
