Most sensible people acknowledge that tobacco and tobacco products are harmful to health. Apart from the increased risk of heart problems, stroke and cancer, tobacco is also responsible for a number of dental issues including stained teeth, gum disease and oral cancer. It is not easy to quit the habit but it can be done if a plan is put in place and adhered to. The plan should include:

Motivation - List the benefits of quitting including money saved, healthier skin, hair and teeth, improved health and fitness, a whiter smile and any others that come to mind.

Support - Seek support from family, friends, fellow quitters or quit smoking groups.

Triggers - The craving for a cigarette is greater under certain circumstances like social gatherings or meeting friends who also smoke. Recognise these triggers and control the situation by avoiding them or substituting cigarettes with chewing gum or sweets.

Prolonged use of tobacco products will only lead to medical and dental problems but the moment you quit your body starts to recover. It is often necessary to try quitting tobacco numerous times but becoming a former smoker will not only make your doctor and dentist happier but also significantly improve your quality of life.
