What Causes Gingivitis (Early Gum Disease)?

gingivitisGingivitis is an oral condition that is typified by red, puffy and inflamed gums that bleed when you brush. If left untreated, it will most likely lead to gum disease.

The condition is very common and responds well to treatment by a dentist but it is far better to avoid gingivitis entirely. This can be done by following some simple guidelines:

  • Avoid plaque build-up by brushing teeth regularly and properly
  • Floss daily to remove debris and food particles from between the teeth
  • Avoid smoking or using tobacco products

Gingivitis is also more likely to be a concern for those with crowded or crooked teeth as it is almost impossible to properly clean the surfaces of the teeth and the gaps between them.

Other contributory factors include diabetes, hormonal changes during pregnancy, some anti-seizure medications and a family history of gingivitis and gum disease. Usually, gingivitis requires no special treatment although the dentist may consider a deep cleaning to clear plaque from around and under the gumline.

A good dental care regimen is the most important weapon in the fight against developing any issues with the gums including infections, gingivitis and gum disease and further information can be found at https://yourdentalhealthresource.com/gingivitis-top-causes-and-how-to-treat-it/
