Why Water is Essential to Dental Health

drinking waterWater is not only necessary for survival but also plays a key role in bodily and dental health. Without water in regular amounts, all internal organs would fail.

While the effects of a lack of water may not be as traumatic to teeth and gums, they are nonetheless significant. Without regular infusions of water dental health would rapidly deteriorate because water:

  • Acts as a mouth rinse to clear food particles and other debris that can lead to a build-up of harmful bacteria.
  • Nullifies the effect of acids which can erode tooth enamel.
  • Replenishes the supply of saliva in the mouth which is necessary in combatting bacterial, plaque and tartar build-up.

One of the first oral problems caused by a lack of water is dry mouth. This condition makes it easier for acids and bacteria to harm the teeth - which can lead to other dental issues such as bad breath, cavities and gum disease.

Plain water is best as sparkling water is more acidic and flavoured water contains sugars. Fluoridated water offers the best protection for teeth.  Any concerns about the amount of fluoride being consumed should be discussed in detail with your dentist who can reassure you of its safety.
